Is Amherst College or the University of Maryland better for a liberal arts education?

The central tradeoff is intimacy and curricular freedom at Amherst versus the scale, breadth, and public-university resources of the University of Maryland. Amherst is built around a small residential liberal arts college model: close faculty access, discussion-centered classes, a notably open curriculum, and an undergraduate-focused academic culture. Its Five College Consortium also lets students take courses at Smith, Mount Holyoke, Hampshire, and UMass Amherst while retaining Amherst’s small-college home base.

Maryland can provide an excellent humanities education, particularly for a student who wants the options of a major research university. Its departments in areas such as English, history, philosophy, languages, and art history offer more course variety, along with access to archives, speakers, internships, and the cultural and professional opportunities of the Washington, D.C., area. But students need to be more proactive about finding small seminars, faculty mentorship, and a tight intellectual community within a much larger campus.

For a student whose main priority is a classic undergraduate liberal arts environment, Amherst is the more fitting choice. The open curriculum encourages sustained exploration across the humanities, and the smaller setting makes seminar participation and relationships with professors more central to everyday academic life. Maryland is especially compelling when its specific programs, in-state affordability, D.C.-area opportunities, or the energy of a large university outweigh the desire for that smaller liberal arts college experience.
