Is USC worth the extra cost compared with the University of Maryland?

The central tradeoff is USC’s access to Los Angeles, its unusually active private-university alumni network, and a more residential campus experience versus Maryland’s far lower in-state cost and excellent access to the Washington, D.C., region. USC can create real advantages in fields tied closely to Southern California, especially film, media, entertainment, design, entrepreneurship, and some technology and business paths. Maryland is not a “settling” option academically: it is a major research university with particularly strong opportunities in computer science, engineering, business, public policy, and government-adjacent work.

For many students, Maryland’s proximity to D.C. is a career asset comparable to USC’s Los Angeles location. Federal agencies, contractors, research labs, nonprofits, and policy organizations are accessible during the school year, not just over summers. Maryland also has a large alumni base in the Mid-Atlantic and a deep campus recruiting ecosystem, so a motivated student can build a strong résumé without paying private-school prices.

USC’s premium is most defensible when the student has a clear reason to use its setting and connections. A student pursuing screenwriting who will actively seek internships, student productions, and alumni contacts in L.A. may find USC’s location materially valuable. The same can be true for a student admitted to a particularly distinctive USC program or receiving enough aid that the remaining difference is manageable. Prestige alone rarely turns a substantially higher bill into a sound financial decision, particularly if the family would need significant loans.

Absent a specific USC program, career plan, or financial situation that makes the extra cost comfortable, Maryland is the more prudent choice. It offers strong academics and career pathways while preserving money for graduate school, relocation, internships, or a lower-debt start after college.
