Is Santa Clara University worth paying more than the University of Maryland?

For most students, Santa Clara University is not worth a substantially higher cost than the University of Maryland unless you can pay the difference without significant borrowing and have a clear reason to use Santa Clara’s Silicon Valley location. Maryland offers strong academics, major research resources, and a large employer network at a price that often produces better financial value. The gap matters especially if Santa Clara would require federal Parent PLUS loans or substantial private loans.

Santa Clara’s most concrete advantage is proximity to Silicon Valley. Students interested in technology, entrepreneurship, business, and certain engineering paths can benefit from internships, alumni connections, and academic-year access to companies in the region. That advantage is real, but it is not automatic: students still need to pursue internships, build skills, and network, and Maryland students can reach excellent opportunities through its Washington, D.C., and federal-agency connections.

Maryland has the scale of a flagship research university, including broader course offerings, research labs, student organizations, and recruiting across many fields. Its College Park location also provides access to internships in government, policy, cybersecurity, consulting, health, and technology.

Put the actual four-year net-price difference next to likely debt. A modest difference that your family can comfortably absorb may be reasonable for a student committed to Santa Clara’s smaller private-university environment and Silicon Valley access. A large difference, particularly one financed by loans, is difficult to justify because Maryland can lead to similarly strong graduate-school and career outcomes.
