Is Duke harder to get into than the University of Florida?

I’m a high school senior comparing Duke and the University of Florida, and I’m trying to understand which school is generally more difficult to gain admission to. I know admissions can vary by applicant and program, but I’m looking for a broad comparison of their selectivity.

Duke is broadly more difficult to gain admission to than the University of Florida. Duke has a far smaller entering class relative to its national and international applicant pool, and it evaluates applicants in an especially selective holistic process. Even students with exceptional grades, rigorous coursework, and strong activities can face unpredictable results at Duke.

The University of Florida is also highly selective. A student with a strong academic record, demanding course schedule, and solid involvement may have a more realistic path at UF than at Duke, but admission is still far from automatic. Florida residency can be meaningful in UF’s admissions context because UF is a public flagship with a mission to serve in-state students.

Duke tends to fit applicants seeking a private, nationally selective university where distinctive intellectual interests, sustained extracurricular impact, recommendations, and essays all need to stand out among very accomplished peers. UF suits students looking for a large public research university with strong academics, broad program options, and a campus experience shaped partly by Florida’s public-university mission.
