Is UC San Diego or Boston University better for a career in journalism?

At BU, students can build clips through outlets such as The Daily Free Press, WTBU radio, and BUTV10, alongside journalism-specific classes and faculty connections. That structure is valuable for entering internships with a portfolio and understanding newsroom expectations before graduation.

UC San Diego does not have the same standalone undergraduate journalism-school pathway. A student can still prepare well through majors such as communication, writing-related coursework, data or science fields, and reporting for The UCSD Guardian, but they would need to intentionally assemble journalism training, clips, and internships. UCSD can be particularly appealing for someone who wants to combine reporting with science, technology, climate, or public-policy expertise, given the university’s research strengths and San Diego setting.

For a student whose primary goal is to become a working journalist, Boston University is the more direct and better-resourced choice. UC San Diego is a credible option when the student prefers its campus, academic offerings, or a specialized reporting niche and is comfortable taking greater initiative to create a journalism-focused path.
