How does the campus experience at Carnegie Mellon compare with Ohio State?

Carnegie Mellon tends to fit students who want a compact, intellectually intense campus where classmates often bond through projects, studios, rehearsals, and demanding coursework. Its Pittsburgh campus is concentrated in Oakland, so students frequently run into people they know, and the culture can feel closely tied to individual schools such as computer science, engineering, drama, design, or business. Social life is active, but it is less centered on large-scale school spirit and more on friend groups, academic communities, makerspaces, performances, and student organizations.

Meeting people at CMU can be relatively natural within a major or residence community because students spend substantial time working alongside one another. The tradeoff is that the campus can feel academically consuming, and students may need to be intentional about meeting people outside their department, especially because the different programs have distinct cultures.

Ohio State fits students energized by a much larger, more traditional university environment. The Columbus campus has a strong collective identity built around athletics, traditions, residence halls, campus events, and a very broad menu of clubs and communities. There is more happening on any given weekend and more types of people to meet, from research-focused students to fans deeply involved in Big Ten culture.

At Ohio State, making friends often takes more initiative simply because the student body and campus are so large. Students who join organizations, attend residence-hall events, take part in campus traditions, or find a smaller academic or social community can feel very connected; students who do not seek out those spaces may find the scale more anonymous. CMU feels like a focused community embedded in a city, while Ohio State feels like a full-scale college town and major public university ecosystem.
