The biggest practical difference is that Dartmouth makes mountain-based outdoor life part of an ordinary week, while USC offers year-round Southern California recreation but often requires planning transportation around Los Angeles. Dartmouth students can reach hiking, trail running, paddling, and nearby skiing directly from or close to Hanover, and the Dartmouth Outing Club is unusually central to campus culture. USC students have excellent access to beaches, climbing, surfing, and urban hiking, but those destinations are not embedded in the immediate campus setting.

At Dartmouth, the Appalachian Trail passes through Hanover, and students have ready access to the White Mountains, local rivers, and the Dartmouth Skiway. The Outing Club runs trips and supports many subclubs, so it is realistic to find companions for a weekend backpacking trip, a ski day, or a casual afternoon hike. Winter is a real part of the experience: it expands skiing and snow sports, but cold, snow, and shorter daylight can make some activities less convenient.

USC has a different but appealing outdoor rhythm. Its Los Angeles location supports frequent beach days, surfing, cycling, climbing gyms, warm-weather running, and hikes in places such as Griffith Park and the Santa Monica Mountains. Campus recreation and student organizations provide ways to meet people for outings, but traffic, car access, and travel time can make spontaneous camping or mountain trips harder. USC is particularly attractive for someone who values sunshine and coastal activities throughout the academic year.

For regular hiking, skiing, camping, and a campus community where outdoor trips are a major social outlet, Dartmouth is the clear choice. USC is stronger only if your ideal outdoor life centers on Southern California beaches, warm weather, and the variety of a large city rather than immediate access to mountains and wilderness.
