Boston University vs. Brandeis: Which Has Stronger Jewish Student Life?

The biggest practical difference is that Jewish life at Brandeis is woven into the campus calendar and daily culture, while at Boston University it is active but more centered in particular organizations and spaces within a much larger urban university. Brandeis was founded by the American Jewish community, offers kosher dining, and does not schedule regular undergraduate classes on major Jewish holidays. At BU, Jewish students can find a substantial and engaged community through BU Hillel, Chabad, Jewish Greek-letter organizations, and student groups representing a range of religious, cultural, and political perspectives. BU’s location in Boston also adds access to synagogues, Jewish neighborhoods, internships, and citywide events. However, the scale and decentralized nature of BU mean that participating usually takes more initiative: Jewish life is present and accessible, but it is not as defining a feature of the overall campus environment.

BU can be an excellent fit for someone who wants an active Hillel community alongside the energy, size, and opportunities of a major city university, but Brandeis offers the stronger and more seamless Jewish-campus experience.
