Boston University vs. Tufts: Which Has a Stronger Campus Community?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Tufts creates community through a more contained, residential undergraduate campus, while BU creates it through a much larger university embedded in Boston. At Tufts, students are more likely to keep running into the same people in residence halls, on the Medford/Somerville campus, and at campus traditions or club events. BU has plenty of active organizations and school spirit, but its long Commonwealth Avenue layout and city setting can make daily life feel more self-directed and dispersed.

Tufts’ residential environment, walkable central campus, and strong undergraduate focus make it easier for friend groups and student organizations to overlap. Nearby Davis Square also gives students an off-campus place to gather without making campus itself feel disconnected from student life.

BU can be an excellent community fit for someone who likes meeting people through a particular college, residence hall, club, cultural organization, or activity rather than expecting the entire university to feel intimate. Its location gives students unusual access to Boston, and many enjoy the energy of being part of a large, diverse student body. The tradeoff is that students often need to be more intentional about building a smaller community within BU.

For the specific priority of a consistently connected, socially engaged campus atmosphere, Tufts is the stronger choice. BU may be more appealing if the excitement, independence, and opportunities of a major city matter as much as a close-knit campus feel.
