Is Northwestern or UIUC better for computer science careers?

Northwestern can be the more compelling fit for a student who wants strong CS preparation in a smaller, more interdisciplinary private-university environment. Through McCormick, students can combine computing with fields such as design, entrepreneurship, cognitive science, economics, journalism, or biomedical work, while benefiting from Evanston’s proximity to Chicago. Northwestern also has solid recruiting and a powerful alumni network, particularly for students interested in product-oriented work, tech plus business, quantitative fields, or graduate study.

Neither school closes doors to software engineering careers; individual internships, projects, interview preparation, and coursework will matter far more than a modest difference in institutional reputation. UIUC has a clearer edge in sheer CS scale, specialized technical options, and the concentration of employers and CS-focused peers. Northwestern may be worth choosing when its academic culture, interdisciplinary flexibility, campus experience, or financial package is meaningfully more attractive to you.
