How does weather affect campus life at Northwestern compared with UCLA?

The biggest day-to-day tradeoff is that UCLA makes outdoor life possible almost all year, while Northwestern’s weather creates a much more seasonal campus rhythm, especially during its cold, windy winters. At UCLA, students commonly eat outside, study on patios, walk Westwood, and attend outdoor events through most of the academic year. At Northwestern’s Evanston campus, Lake Michigan wind, snow, ice, and early winter darkness can make even short walks feel like a real part of planning your day.

Northwestern is not cold all the time. Early fall can be especially appealing, with campus activity concentrated along the lakefront and students enjoying the beaches, paths, and lawn spaces before temperatures drop. Spring also brings a noticeable release of energy outdoors, though it can arrive late and remain unpredictable. In winter, students still socialize and attend events, but indoor spaces, residence halls, libraries, and campus programming matter more; a serious coat, waterproof boots, and comfort with gray days are practical necessities.

UCLA has a Mediterranean climate: many sunny, mild days, limited rain compared with Evanston, and very little weather-related disruption to walking or outdoor plans. The campus has an open, active feel because students can reliably use quads, terraces, and nearby outdoor destinations. The tradeoff is occasional heat, strong sun, and the coastal "June Gloom" period, when mornings can be cool and overcast before clearing later in the day.
