How does student life compare at Northwestern and Colby?

Neither school has a universally “stronger” student-life experience; Northwestern suits students who want a busy, high-energy campus with easy access to Chicago, while Colby suits students who want an unusually close residential community and a more outdoors-oriented college experience. Northwestern’s larger undergraduate population, Division I athletics, extensive student organizations, performing arts scene, Greek-life presence, and Evanston location create more distinct social circles and more to do on any given weekend. Colby is much smaller and more residential, so classmates tend to overlap across courses, dining halls, clubs, and weekend plans.

At Northwestern, student life can feel like a blend of a traditional campus and a city-adjacent university. Students can attend campus events, concerts, athletic games, and performances, but they also go into Chicago for internships, restaurants, museums, and nightlife. The breadth is a real advantage for someone with several interests, particularly in fields such as journalism, theater, music, engineering, business-related clubs, or research. The tradeoff is that students need to be proactive: with so many organizations and social groups, it is easier to have choices but harder for the entire campus to feel like one shared community.

Colby has a more contained rhythm. Because it is in Waterville, Maine, rather than near a major city, much of the social life happens on campus: meals with friends, residence-hall gatherings, student events, athletic teams, clubs, and traditions. Its smaller scale can make it easier to become known by professors and peers and to take leadership roles early. Outdoor recreation is also a meaningful part of the culture, with many students drawn to hiking, skiing, paddling, and Maine’s natural environment. Students looking for frequent off-campus entertainment, major-city access, or a very large menu of niche organizations may find the setting quieter than Northwestern.
