How does the climate affect student life at Johns Hopkins compared with UCLA?

For a consistently outdoor, walkable-in-light-clothes student lifestyle, UCLA has the clear climate advantage; Johns Hopkins offers a more seasonal campus experience that requires planning around cold, rain, and occasional snow. UCLA’s Westwood campus is mild for much of the academic year, while Baltimore has real winter weather and humid summers.

At UCLA, students can use the lawns, outdoor tables, and nearby Westwood spaces through most quarters, and the beach is close enough to be a realistic weekend or post-class option. Walking across campus is rarely limited by temperature. The tradeoff is that fall heat waves can be uncomfortable, winter brings periodic rain, and late spring mornings can be cool and overcast during the coastal “June Gloom” period.

At Johns Hopkins, the Homewood campus is compact and attractive in every season, but daily routines change more noticeably. Fall and spring are especially pleasant for the quads and outdoor events; winter can mean bundling up, wet paths, and occasional snow or ice disruptions, while late summer and early fall can feel hot and humid. Most students still walk everywhere on campus, but jackets, waterproof shoes, and indoor study or social plans matter more than they would at UCLA.
