Which is more affordable for an in-state student: the University of Georgia or Virginia Tech?

For a Georgia resident, the University of Georgia will almost certainly be more affordable than Virginia Tech. You would be charged UGA’s Georgia-resident tuition rate, while Virginia Tech would ordinarily bill you at its substantially higher nonresident rate. You also may be eligible to use Georgia’s HOPE or Zell Miller Scholarship at UGA if you meet the program requirements; those awards do not apply to Virginia Tech.

Housing and food costs may be in a broadly similar range at the two schools, depending on residence hall, meal plan, and off-campus choices, but that difference is unlikely to offset Virginia Tech’s nonresident tuition premium. Athens is also much closer for a student living in Georgia than Blacksburg, Virginia, so trips home, move-in travel, and transportation during breaks will normally cost less at UGA.

Virginia Tech could become competitive only if its financial-aid package includes unusually large need-based grants or renewable merit aid that substantially reduces the nonresident price. Do not assume you can obtain Virginia in-state tuition after enrolling: attending Virginia Tech by itself does not establish Virginia residency for tuition purposes. Compare each school’s official net-price estimate and final aid offer, including any renewable scholarships, but UGA has the clear built-in cost advantage for most Georgia residents.
