Tulane vs. NYU: Which Is Better for Off-Campus Student Living?

At NYU, off-campus living is common after the first year, although finding an apartment in New York requires a larger budget and earlier planning. You would still be connected to campus through Washington Square, student events, and the subway, but your day-to-day experience would feel like living in the city rather than on a traditional enclosed campus.

NYU’s main challenge is logistics. Rentals near Greenwich Village and the East Village are costly and competitive, and many students look farther into Brooklyn, Queens, or Upper Manhattan to manage rent. That can mean roommates, a commute, broker or application fees, and a guarantor requirement. The payoff is access to a wide range of neighborhoods, internships, restaurants, arts, and social life beyond the university.

Tulane offers a more campus-centered off-campus experience once you are eligible to move out. Many upperclassmen live in the Uptown area near campus, including neighborhoods around Audubon Park and Carrollton, where walking or biking to class and seeing classmates regularly is more realistic. The rental search is typically less citywide and less commute-dependent than at NYU, and the social scene remains closely tied to Tulane.
