Tulane vs. Cal State LA: Which offers a stronger urban campus experience?

Tulane offers the more immersive day-to-day urban campus experience, even though Cal State LA is geographically closer to downtown Los Angeles. Tulane’s Uptown New Orleans campus sits in a residential but active city neighborhood, with the St. Charles streetcar connecting students to the Central Business District and French Quarter. Students can also walk to nearby restaurants, music venues, cafés, and shops along Freret Street and Magazine Street.

New Orleans is a comparatively compact, distinct city, so its food, festivals, architecture, and music culture are easy to encounter without treating a trip off campus as a major excursion.

Cal State LA is located in University Hills, east of downtown, and has access to regional transit, including the Cal State LA station and bus connections. However, the campus itself is more separated from a walkable commercial district by hills, major roads, and freeway infrastructure. Los Angeles offers enormous cultural and professional opportunities, but its scale and car-oriented layout can make those opportunities feel less immediate in everyday student life.
