Cornell vs. UW–Madison for Undergraduate Biology Research

I’m a high school senior deciding between Cornell and the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and I’m interested in majoring in biology. Research opportunities are one of my biggest priorities, especially the ability for undergraduates to join labs and work closely with faculty. The biggest practical difference is scale: UW–Madison offers a broader, more decentralized biology research ecosystem, while Cornell can make it easier to build a sustained relationship with a professor or smaller lab group once you connect. Biology students can find labs in the biological sciences, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, neuroscience, medicine, public health, agriculture, environmental science, and engineering-adjacent fields. Programs such as the Undergraduate Research Scholars program provide a structured entry point, while major research centers and the medical campus expand the number of possible mentors. The tradeoff is that UW is larger, so students may need to be more proactive about identifying a niche, emailing several labs, and moving beyond large introductory courses.

For a student whose priority is close faculty contact and a potentially more intimate undergraduate research path, Cornell has a slight edge. For someone who wants the widest possible menu of biology subfields, especially biomedical, genetics, microbiology, and public-health-connected research, UW–Madison may offer more directions to explore. In either case, compare the current labs of five to ten professors whose work genuinely interests you; that will be more predictive of your experience than the university name alone.
