How should I compare Cornell and Duke for undergraduate biomedical research opportunities?

I’m a high school senior interested in studying biology or biomedical engineering and eventually pursuing medical research. I’m deciding between Cornell and Duke, and undergraduate access to meaningful biomedical research is one of my most important factors.

The biggest practical tradeoff is Duke’s unusually integrated medical-center environment versus Cornell’s larger, more geographically dispersed life-sciences and engineering research ecosystem. Cornell’s advantage is the range of scientific directions available around biomedical questions. Ithaca students can work with faculty in the College of Engineering, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the Cornell Institute of Biotechnology, and fields such as computational biology, neuroscience, chemical and biomolecular engineering, and biomedical engineering. Cornell can be particularly compelling for someone who wants to combine biomedical research with strong quantitative, computational, or fundamental-science training. Summer research or a deliberate effort to connect with Weill Cornell Medicine can add a clinical dimension, but it requires more initiative and planning than at Duke.

At either school, meaningful access will depend less on the catalog of programs than on how early you contact faculty, the lab’s capacity to train first- and second-year students, and whether you can stay with a project over multiple semesters. Review faculty lab pages now and compare 8 to 12 investigators whose work genuinely interests you; their current projects will reveal more than broad departmental labels.
