How does undergraduate research culture differ between Duke and MIT?

I’m a high school senior interested in studying engineering or a related STEM field, and undergraduate research would be a major part of my college decision. For someone energized by an intensely technical peer environment and eager to start specialized research as early as possible, MIT’s UROP-centered culture is hard to match. In either place, the quality of the experience will depend heavily on the specific lab, mentor, and how quickly the student reaches out.
