Duke provides the stronger overall platform for an undergraduate aiming at a broad scientific research career, particularly in biomedical science, engineering, computational fields, and environmental research. Its undergraduate research options sit alongside major professional schools, including the Duke University School of Medicine and Pratt School of Engineering, and within the Research Triangle’s dense network of universities, hospitals, and research employers. That breadth can make it easier to explore several research directions before committing to a specialty.

A key Duke advantage is the scale and integration of its research ecosystem. Undergraduates can pursue faculty-lab work, structured programs through the Undergraduate Research Support Office, and interdisciplinary projects such as Bass Connections, where students work on team-based research tied to real public or scientific problems.
