Is UT Austin or UConn better for pharmacy?

For a high school senior who wants the clearest, most structured route to becoming a pharmacist, UConn is the stronger choice. UT Austin’s PharmD program is excellent, but students must first complete college prerequisite coursework and then apply separately to the professional program.

That admissions structure is the biggest practical difference. At UConn, students still must meet academic and professional progression requirements, but they have an early place within the School of Pharmacy and access to pharmacy-focused advising and coursework. At UT Austin, a student has more flexibility to choose an undergraduate major or change direction, but pharmacy admission is not secured when they enter UT as a freshman.

UT Austin has a major advantage for Texas residents: in-state tuition and the school’s extensive connections to Texas health systems, pharmacies, and alumni can make it a particularly compelling option for someone planning to practice in Texas. Its College of Pharmacy also offers strong opportunities in research, clinical practice, and the large Austin health-care environment.

UConn offers an established pharmacy-centered undergraduate experience and a broad network of experiential rotations across Connecticut and surrounding areas. For someone certain about pharmacy now, that continuity makes UConn especially attractive. For a Texas resident who values lower cost, wants more time before committing, or expects to build a career in Texas, UT Austin may be the more practical path despite its later PharmD application process.
