Which is better for a pharmaceutical career: UMD or Rutgers?

Rutgers is the more targeted choice for entering the pharmaceutical industry after college. Its Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy offers a B.S. in Pharmaceutical Science, and Rutgers also has a Pharm.D. pathway for students whose goal is pharmacy practice. The university’s Rutgers Institute for Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowships also reflects unusually deep, long-standing ties to drug-development employers.

The biggest differentiator is academic focus. Rutgers lets undergraduates study subjects directly tied to formulation, drug discovery, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and pharmaceutical manufacturing rather than assembling that preparation through a broader biology, chemistry, or engineering major. That can make it easier to explain a clear industry direction when applying for internships and entry-level roles in areas such as quality, regulatory operations, clinical research, manufacturing, or research support.

Location is another practical advantage. New Jersey remains a major concentration of pharmaceutical and life-sciences employers, so Rutgers students have access to a dense regional network for internships, alumni connections, and employer events during the academic year. Those opportunities can matter as much as the major itself when seeking a job immediately after graduation.

UMD is still a compelling option for students drawn to biomedical research, biotech, public health, or federal science and regulation. Its proximity to the NIH and FDA is particularly valuable for interests in clinical research, regulatory science, or government-facing work. But for a student specifically prioritizing pharmaceutical-industry preparation and recruiting, Rutgers provides the more specialized undergraduate infrastructure.
