Should I choose Carnegie Mellon or RPI for cybersecurity?

That ecosystem can create more ways for an undergraduate to find security-oriented courses, research, projects, and mentors.

CMU also benefits from being in Pittsburgh, where its security community has longstanding ties to major technology, defense, and research organizations. Its rigorous computer science and engineering culture is especially valuable if you want a technical cybersecurity career involving systems security, cryptography, network defense, secure software, or security research. The workload can be intense, so students should be ready for a highly demanding academic environment.

RPI is still a credible choice, particularly for a student who wants a smaller technical university setting and may receive a meaningfully better financial package. Its computer science, computer systems engineering, and IT-focused options can provide a solid foundation in programming, networks, and systems, and Troy’s campus culture is strongly STEM-oriented. A motivated student could build cybersecurity experience through electives, projects, internships, and competitions.

The key difference is depth and visibility: CMU has a broader security-centered ecosystem and more nationally prominent cybersecurity research infrastructure, while RPI gives students a focused engineering education but requires more self-direction to assemble a comparably specialized security path. Unless cost, campus environment, or a particular RPI program is a decisive factor, CMU provides the stronger platform for rigorous cybersecurity preparation.
