Is NYU or Princeton more prestigious for a career in finance?

The main tradeoff is Princeton’s broader institutional reputation versus NYU Stern’s unusually direct access to finance internships, alumni, and the New York City market during the school year. For investment banking recruiting, both Princeton and NYU Stern are well-known target schools with strong alumni representation at major banks. Princeton students may benefit from a smaller undergraduate population and a university name recognized far beyond finance, while Stern students are immersed in a business-focused peer group in Manhattan.

Finance employers do not treat either school as an obstacle. At Princeton, students commonly enter banking, asset management, private equity, and related fields despite the university not having an undergraduate business school. Its economics, mathematics, computer science, and operations research programs are highly respected, and recruiters know Princeton’s academic selectivity well. NYU Stern has a particularly visible finance brand, extensive finance coursework, and practical advantages for networking, part-time work, and semester internships in New York.

For the narrow question of prestige, Princeton carries more overall institutional prestige and is typically viewed as the stronger name across employers, industries, and long-term career paths. Within finance specifically, however, NYU Stern is highly prestigious and can be just as practical, or more practical, for a student who wants a business-centered undergraduate experience and consistent access to New York recruiting. Princeton is the clearer answer for broad prestige; NYU Stern is not meaningfully “lesser” for launching an investment-banking career.
