The biggest practical difference is location and structure: Georgetown gives you a purpose-built undergraduate international-affairs curriculum in Washington, D.C., while NYU offers a more flexible, globally distributed education anchored in New York City. Georgetown students can pursue Foreign Service-relevant majors through the School of Foreign Service. Its D.C. setting also makes semester-time internships and events with federal agencies, embassies, policy organizations, and international-development groups unusually accessible.

NYU can be excellent preparation for students who want to combine politics or global studies with a language, area studies, journalism, economics, or another field. New York provides proximity to the United Nations, consulates, NGOs, media organizations, and international business, and NYU’s study-away network can support substantial overseas experience. A student who takes advanced language courses, builds regional expertise, and pursues internships connected to the UN or global nonprofits could emerge very well prepared.

For the Foreign Service specifically, Georgetown has the clearer built-in advantage. NYU is the stronger option only when its particular academic combination or international study opportunities match your goals more closely than Georgetown’s SFS programs. For most seniors seeking the most direct undergraduate runway toward a U.S. Foreign Service career, Georgetown would be the better choice.
