Is Boston University worth choosing over the University of San Diego?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Boston University offers a denser big-city academic and internship ecosystem, while the University of San Diego offers a smaller, more residential undergraduate experience with closer day-to-day access to faculty and campus life. BU’s location in Boston puts students near major hospitals, research institutions, media organizations, nonprofits, startups, and employers during the school year. USD has strong access to the San Diego region, but its campus culture is more self-contained and typically feels less urban and less sprawling than BU’s.

Academically, BU can provide more breadth in many fields because of its larger size and extensive schools and colleges, including particularly visible opportunities in business, communications, health-related study, international affairs, and research. Its alumni footprint is also broader nationally, especially in East Coast professional circles. That can matter for a student who expects to use semesters in the city for internships, networking, or specialized electives.

USD’s advantages are meaningful: a more intimate setting, a distinct mission-centered culture, attractive campus environment, and potentially easier access to professors, leadership roles, and tight-knit communities. For students who learn best in a smaller setting or want a less intense urban pace, those factors can produce a stronger actual college experience.

Boston University is worth choosing over USD when the costs are comparable and you plan to actively use Boston’s professional access, larger course selection, and national network. If BU would require substantially more borrowing, however, its added career value rarely justifies a large debt gap over USD for a broadly similar field of study. USD is the better value when its price or campus environment fits you materially better.
