Is Boston University worth the cost compared with UC San Diego for college?

For most students, Boston University is only worth a much higher price than UC San Diego if there is something very specific about BU that you know you will use. UC San Diego already offers a strong academic reputation, especially in STEM and research, and it does so at a cost that is often far easier to justify. If the price gap is big enough that it would create meaningful debt or family strain, UC San Diego is usually the more sensible call.

BU tends to make more sense for a student who wants an urban East Coast experience woven directly into college life. Its Boston location is a real advantage for fields like communications, business, policy, some social sciences, pre-professional exploration, and internships during the school year. A student who is excited by a city campus, likes the idea of being integrated into Boston rather than a more traditional campus environment, and expects to actively use those connections may feel the extra cost translates into real value.

UC San Diego fits the student who wants excellent academics without paying a premium for city access or private-school branding. It is especially compelling for students interested in science, engineering, health-related fields, math, computer science, economics, and research. The campus has deep academic resources, strong faculty, and a reputation that travels well, so many students will not see enough extra return from BU to justify spending substantially more.

The key question is not whether BU is a good school, because it is. The question is whether the added cost buys something you specifically need: a certain location, network, campus style, or academic setup that UCSD cannot match for you personally. If your goals are broad and both schools serve them, UC San Diego is often the stronger value. If BU gives you a clearly better environment for your intended field and you can afford it without major financial pressure, then the extra cost can be reasonable.
