JHU vs. Columbia: Which college offers better access to New York City internships?

Columbia offers more immediate and practical access to New York City internships. Its Manhattan location makes it realistic to intern during the academic year with city agencies, nonprofits, hospitals, advocacy groups, media organizations, and policy-focused offices while remaining enrolled full time. For public health and policy specifically, being able to commute to organizations such as the New York City health department, major health systems, and international institutions is a meaningful advantage.

Columbia’s alumni and employer networks are especially concentrated in New York. That does not guarantee an internship, but it can make informational interviews, campus recruiting events, alumni outreach, and referrals easier to arrange.

Johns Hopkins can still be an excellent route to public health and policy work, but its most convenient ecosystems are Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Hopkins has exceptional public-health credibility and strong connections to research, health policy, government, and nonprofit work, particularly through its public health community and proximity to federal agencies and national policy organizations. A Hopkins student can certainly pursue New York internships, especially over the summer, but would need to rely more on remote networking, a temporary move, or travel.

For an applicant specifically prioritizing frequent, in-semester New York City internship access, Columbia has the clearer logistical and networking advantage. Hopkins may be more compelling if your interests lean toward public-health research, epidemiology, or health policy opportunities centered in Baltimore and Washington.
