Duke fits students who want a self-contained, residential campus with a strong college-community center of gravity, plus access to a growing small city and the broader Research Triangle. Its main undergraduate areas feel park-like and separate from downtown Durham, so daily life tends to revolve around campus, athletics, student events, and Duke’s own dining and transportation. Durham adds restaurants, music, breweries, museums, and Bulls games without making the university feel embedded in the city.

Getting around Duke is easiest through campus buses, walking, biking, rideshares, or a car. Downtown Durham is close but not typically part of every student’s walkable routine, and trips to Raleigh, Chapel Hill, hiking areas, or the airport are more convenient with a car or planned transit. The payoff is space, greenery, and a distinctly campus-focused atmosphere.

Brown fits students who want the city to be more visible in everyday college life.
