Which is better for studying design: UT Austin or the University of Minnesota?

For a student seeking the broadest undergraduate design foundation, the University of Minnesota is the stronger academic fit. Its College of Design is a dedicated school spanning graphic design, product design, interior design, architecture, landscape architecture, and retail merchandising, so students encounter design as a connected set of disciplines rather than only a visual-communication field. The college’s early coursework emphasizes foundational studio skills, visual thinking, making, and design process before students move deeply into a major.

Minnesota also offers more natural opportunities to test adjacent design interests. Someone who begins in graphic design but discovers an interest in products, spaces, sustainability, or the built environment has relevant courses, faculty, and peer work concentrated within the same college.
