Which is better for studying finance: UT Austin or UIUC?

Gies has a strong reputation in analytics, accounting, fintech-adjacent work, and large-scale experiential learning, while its Midwest location can be advantageous for Chicago recruiting. UIUC’s broad technical ecosystem also makes it easier to pair finance with computer science, data science, or statistics, which can be valuable for trading, risk, fintech, and quantitative roles.

The practical distinction is recruiting geography and career emphasis. McCombs is especially compelling for a student who expects to build a career in Texas or wants access to its business alumni network; UT Austin’s location also provides a major-city internship environment during the academic year. UIUC can be particularly attractive for students targeting Chicago, corporate finance, accounting-related advisory work, or finance roles that reward substantial quantitative coursework.

At either school, finance outcomes will depend heavily on joining relevant student organizations early, maintaining strong grades, developing Excel and accounting fluency, and pursuing internships. For the classic finance pipeline and Texas-based opportunities, McCombs is the more direct choice.
