For a psychology career, neither school’s name alone will determine graduate-school outcomes; sustained lab research, strong statistics and methods coursework, high grades, and detailed faculty recommendations will matter far more.

UT Austin’s Department of Psychology is especially appealing for students drawn to research-intensive paths, including clinical, cognitive, developmental, social, and behavioral neuroscience work. Its location also creates access to hospitals, community organizations, and technology or health-related settings that can complement psychology training. Because the university is large, students should be proactive about approaching labs early.

Ohio State also has a large, well-established psychology department with research across major subfields, undergraduate research pathways, and access to medical, behavioral health, and community-based opportunities in Columbus. Its scale can be an advantage for exploring psychology alongside neuroscience, public health, data analysis, or human development. At either school, a student considering doctoral programs should plan to join a lab, complete an honors thesis or substantial independent project when possible, and take quantitative courses beyond the minimum major requirements.

UT Austin has a slight edge if the costs are comparable and you want a research-centered psychology education in Austin. Ohio State is an equally credible preparation route and should take the lead if it is substantially more affordable or offers you a clearer path to research, honors, or close faculty mentorship.
