Which is better for an undergraduate marine biology major: Arizona State University or UC Santa Cruz?

UC Santa Cruz is the clear choice for an undergraduate focused specifically on marine biology. It offers a dedicated Marine Biology B.S. and places students beside Monterey Bay, one of the country’s most important coastal research environments. Arizona State has strong life-science programs, but it does not provide the same built-in marine curriculum, coastal setting, or concentration of ocean-focused research opportunities.

At UC Santa Cruz, marine biology students can take specialized coursework in areas such as marine ecology, oceanography, conservation, and organismal biology while building a foundation in chemistry, physics, and biology. Long Marine Laboratory, located on the coast, is a particularly valuable resource for field-based learning and research exposure.

Location matters unusually much in this major. UCSC students have practical access to tide pools, kelp forests, beaches, Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, and nearby marine-science organizations.
