Which offers a better college town experience: Arizona State in Tempe or the University of Vermont in Burlington?

For a classic, walkable, student-centered college-town experience, the University of Vermont in Burlington has the edge. UVM sits close to downtown Burlington, Church Street Marketplace, Lake Champlain, and a concentrated mix of cafés, restaurants, bookstores, and local events. The setting feels smaller-scale and more tied to the university community than Tempe does.

Burlington’s biggest advantage is that students can move easily between campus, downtown, the waterfront, and nearby neighborhoods without needing a car. Church Street is a pedestrian mall with year-round activity, while the lakefront, bike path, and outdoor culture give the town a strong sense of place. Winters are long and cold, so the social scene becomes more indoor-focused for part of the year.

Tempe is livelier in a bigger-city way. ASU’s campus is adjacent to Mill Avenue, which has abundant dining, nightlife, concerts, sports, and student traffic, and the Valley Metro light rail connects students to downtown Phoenix, Mesa, and other parts of the metro area. It is highly walkable immediately around campus, but Tempe feels like one energetic district within a large, sprawling metropolitan region rather than a self-contained college town.

Tempe also offers far more warm-weather outdoor time, plus easy access to major-league sports, airports, internships, and Phoenix-area entertainment. Burlington offers a more intimate downtown, stronger local character, and a more recognizable traditional college-town atmosphere.
