Is UMD or Santa Clara University better for getting Silicon Valley internships?

The biggest practical tradeoff is proximity versus scale: Santa Clara places you in the middle of Silicon Valley, while UMD offers a much larger computer science ecosystem and strong recruiting access from the Washington, D.C., area. At Santa Clara, local companies, startups, alumni, and school-year part-time opportunities can be easier to reach in person. UMD students may need to be more deliberate about pursuing Bay Area roles, but they benefit from a large CS student community, substantial employer recruiting, and strong connections to technology, defense, cybersecurity, and federal-adjacent work.

For internships specifically in Silicon Valley, Santa Clara has the clearer geographic advantage. Being close to San Jose, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, and San Francisco makes networking events, interviews, coffee chats, and internships during the academic year more realistic. Its location also helps students encounter smaller companies and startups that may not run broad national recruiting programs.

UMD can still lead to Silicon Valley internships, especially for a student who builds solid technical skills, completes projects, prepares early for interviews, and applies broadly. Its computer science program is larger, and the D.C. region provides many internship options that can strengthen a résumé before applying to Bay Area companies. However, its most natural in-person internship market is D.C., not Silicon Valley.

For the narrow goal of maximizing convenient access to Silicon Valley internships during college, Santa Clara has the edge. UMD is the more compelling option if you also value a larger CS environment and want especially strong access to D.C.-area technology, government, and cybersecurity opportunities.
