Syracuse University vs. Penn State: Which offers better communications internship opportunities?

Syracuse University offers the more targeted communications internship pipeline, particularly for public relations, journalism, advertising, and media students. Its S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications is deeply connected to media employers, and its New York City and Los Angeles semester programs place students in the two most important U.S. markets for many communications careers. Newhouse also has dedicated career-development support tailored to communications fields rather than a broad, university-wide approach alone.

The location advantage is less about Syracuse itself and more about the school’s structured access to major cities. A student can build experience through Newhouse’s industry-facing coursework, alumni contacts, and off-campus programs while still earning Syracuse credit. For PR and media specifically, that can make it easier to pursue internships at agencies, publishers, broadcasters, entertainment companies, and corporate communications offices during the academic year, not only in summer.

Penn State’s Bellisario College of Communications is well regarded and benefits from Penn State’s exceptionally large alumni community. That network can be valuable across Pennsylvania and nationally, and University Park provides campus media, athletics communications, and institutional communications opportunities. However, State College is a smaller, more isolated internship market, so many of the most relevant off-campus roles require students to proactively seek opportunities in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, New York, or elsewhere. Penn State can absolutely work for a motivated student, but Syracuse provides a more built-in route to media and PR internships.
