Which university offers better undergraduate research opportunities: Syracuse or Michigan?

For sheer breadth, funding, and the number of established pathways into faculty-led work, the University of Michigan offers the stronger undergraduate research environment.

Michigan’s scale is its clearest advantage: students can pursue research through individual departments, summer programs, institutes, libraries, and campus-wide programs. That breadth can be especially valuable for a student who may change academic interests or wants access to specialized labs and major ongoing projects. The tradeoff is that some popular labs can be competitive, so students need to be proactive about contacting faculty and building relevant skills.

Syracuse provides a more intimate research setting and has meaningful undergraduate support through the Syracuse Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Engagement, including research grants, presentations, and faculty-mentored projects. Its smaller undergraduate population may make it easier to form sustained relationships with professors, particularly in areas where Syracuse has distinctive strengths, such as communications, public affairs, architecture, education, and selected social sciences. But Michigan has more total research activity, more labs and centers, and a deeper bench of opportunities across a wider range of majors, making it the clearer choice when undergraduate research is a central priority.
