Is Harvard harder to get into than the University of Florida?

Harvard is substantially harder to get into than the University of Florida for almost every applicant group. Harvard’s applicant pool is global and extraordinarily credentialed, and it admits only a very small share of applicants through a highly selective holistic review. UF is also a competitive public flagship, but its overall admission process is meaningfully less restrictive than Harvard’s.

At Harvard, excellent grades, rigorous courses, and high test scores are common among applicants rather than distinguishing on their own. Successful applicants typically also show unusual academic, creative, athletic, research, leadership, or community impact, along with compelling personal qualities and strong recommendations.

UF places major weight on academic preparation, including performance in rigorous high school coursework and the strength of the transcript. Florida residency can matter considerably in UF’s public-university context, while Harvard does not have an in-state admissions advantage. An applicant who is competitive for UF should not assume that profile will be competitive for Harvard; Harvard is a reach even for students with near-perfect academic records.
