Columbia vs. Dartmouth: Which college is better for outdoor activities?

Dartmouth offers the substantially stronger overall outdoor experience. Its Hanover, New Hampshire campus is surrounded by trails, rivers, forests, and mountains rather than embedded in a dense city, and the Appalachian Trail runs directly through the area. The Dartmouth Outing Club is a major part of campus life, with student-led trips and activities spanning hiking, climbing, paddling, cycling, camping, and winter sports.

The college also operates the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge, a rustic mountain lodge used for student trips and outdoor programming. Outdoor involvement at Dartmouth can be casual, social, competitive, or highly technical, so it is not limited to varsity athletes or expert hikers.

Columbia does have active outdoor opportunities, including student clubs that organize hiking, climbing, skiing, and trips beyond Manhattan. Its location gives students exceptional access to Central Park, Riverside Park, the Hudson River waterfront, and cultural life in New York City. But meaningful hiking, skiing, and backcountry-style outings usually require leaving campus and planning transportation, which makes them less integrated into ordinary weekly student life.

For a senior who specifically values hiking, skiing, and frequent time in nature, Dartmouth’s setting and outdoor infrastructure make it the clearer match. Columbia can work well for someone who wants an urban college experience with occasional organized escapes outdoors, but it is not built around the outdoors in the way Dartmouth is.
