Is Columbia or Tufts better for developing student independence?

Columbia gives students more real-world independence in daily life because its Morningside Heights campus sits inside New York City, while Tufts gives students more freedom to shape an academic path within a more traditional campus setting. At Columbia, students routinely manage city transportation, internships, cultural opportunities, appointments, and social plans beyond the campus bubble. At Tufts, life is more centered on the Medford/Somerville campus, so independence tends to develop through choosing courses, organizations, research, and off-campus opportunities rather than navigating a major city every day.

Academically, the distinction is especially clear for Columbia College students: the Core Curriculum creates a substantial shared set of required courses. That structure can be intellectually valuable and still leaves room for majors, electives, and exploration, but it means less early freedom than Tufts offers. Columbia Engineering has its own substantial technical requirements as well. Tufts has distribution requirements, but students typically have more latitude to combine fields, change direction, and build an interdisciplinary schedule, especially through its schools and flexible course offerings.

At both schools, students are responsible for finding professors, pursuing internships or research, using advising well, budgeting time, and building community. Columbia’s scale and the city can make it easier to disappear into your own routine, which rewards initiative but can feel less contained. Tufts can feel more accessible and campus-oriented, with a somewhat clearer social center and easier day-to-day connection to classmates.

For the broadest academic freedom, Tufts has the edge. For becoming self-reliant through the practical demands and opportunities of living in New York City, Columbia offers the more independent daily environment; the stronger match depends on which kind of independence you mean.
