Is Tulane or UC Davis better for preparing for veterinary school?

UC Davis is the more direct and resource-rich choice for preparing for veterinary school. It has extensive animal science coursework and broad access to animal-focused research and faculty mentors. Tulane can support a successful pre-vet path, but UC Davis is built around fields that veterinary applicants need to explore early.

At UC Davis, an undergraduate can pursue Animal Science or a life-science major while completing veterinary prerequisite courses such as biology, chemistry, physics, biochemistry, and statistics. Proximity also matters: relationships with veterinarians, researchers, and graduate students can lead to informed mentorship and stronger recommendation letters.

Tulane offers solid biology, ecology, neuroscience, and public-health-related academics, along with research opportunities in New Orleans. However, its strengths are centered more on human health, biomedical research, and public health than on animal science or clinical veterinary training. A Tulane student would likely need to be more proactive about finding regular animal-shadowing, livestock, shelter, wildlife, or veterinary-clinic experiences off campus.

The main reason to choose Tulane instead would be a substantially lower cost, a clear academic environment where you expect to earn a stronger GPA, or a personal preference that would make you more engaged and successful there. Veterinary admissions weigh academic performance, prerequisite completion, sustained animal and veterinary experience, research or service, and recommendations far more than the undergraduate school’s name. But assuming cost and personal fit are comparable, UC Davis provides the clearer infrastructure for discovering veterinary interests and building that record.
