Is Rutgers or the University of Maryland more affordable for New Jersey students?

For most New Jersey students, Rutgers is the more affordable option because its New Jersey resident tuition rate is substantially lower than the University of Maryland’s nonresident rate. That tuition gap typically remains meaningful even when housing, meals, books, and personal expenses are added, since living costs at the two large public universities are broadly comparable. Rutgers may also be especially cost-effective if you can commute from home or qualify for New Jersey state grant programs.

At Maryland, out-of-state students pay a higher published cost of attendance, and need-based institutional aid for nonresidents is often less predictable than aid available to in-state students. Maryland can become competitive only in specific cases, such as receiving a significant nonresident merit scholarship, a strong need-based aid package, or outside scholarships that travel with you. Do not assume that a merit offer will fully erase the resident versus nonresident tuition difference.

Compare each school’s official net price calculator and, once admitted, the actual aid letters rather than only the sticker price. Include whether grants renew for all four years, travel between New Jersey and campus, and the cost of living on campus versus commuting. Unless Maryland’s final package includes unusually large renewable aid, Rutgers will likely produce the lower four-year cost for a New Jersey resident.
