FSU vs. UC Davis: Which Is Better for Undergraduate Environmental Research?

UC Davis is the stronger choice for broad undergraduate environmental research because its land-grant mission produces unusually deep research activity in agriculture, water, ecosystems, climate, conservation, and environmental policy. Its Environmental Science and Management program is built around those areas, and students can connect with research communities such as the Center for Watershed Sciences, agricultural and ecological laboratories, and the Bodega Marine Laboratory.

The biggest advantage is the range of research settings available close to campus. Davis faculty work on California’s water systems, wildfire and climate resilience, sustainable food production, pollution, biodiversity, and environmental justice, so an undergraduate can explore several directions before committing to a niche. The Undergraduate Research Center and faculty-led labs provide established routes into research, although popular labs may require persistence, strong coursework, and early outreach.

At FSU, research access may feel more personal in a smaller department or lab, but the available specialties are more concentrated around coastal and marine science.
