For medical school, protecting your GPA, earning a strong MCAT score, building sustained clinical service, and avoiding unnecessary debt matter far more than the name on the undergraduate diploma.

Brown’s Open Curriculum can be a major advantage for a pre-med student who is self-directed: you can complete the required biology, chemistry, physics, math, and writing courses while exploring humanities, public health, neuroscience, or policy without a heavy core curriculum. The caution is that flexibility requires careful planning; pre-med prerequisites still need to be sequenced early enough for the MCAT and application timeline.

UGA can provide excellent preparation through its science departments, pre-health advising, undergraduate research, and clinical opportunities in Athens. Its larger classes and student body may mean you need to be more proactive about office hours, labs, leadership, and finding mentors, though programs such as the Honors College can make the academic experience feel smaller. If you are a Georgia resident receiving significant scholarships, UGA may leave you with substantially less undergraduate debt, which is especially meaningful before four costly years of medical school.

Choose UGA if it is dramatically more affordable or if you know you will perform better with a more structured, grounded campus experience; a high-achieving, well-supported UGA applicant is fully competitive for medical school.
