Dartmouth offers a substantially richer and more convenient outdoor life for a student who wants hiking, skiing, and regular access to nature during the school year. Its Hanover, New Hampshire campus sits beside the Connecticut River and near the Appalachian Trail, while the student-run Dartmouth Outing Club organizes trips and maintains extensive outdoor resources. Skiing, trail running, paddling, climbing, and backcountry outings can be part of an ordinary week rather than activities requiring a major trip.

Dartmouth’s setting is its biggest advantage. The college has its own Dartmouth Skiway, a nearby ski area used for recreational skiing and by varsity teams, and it operates the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge in the White Mountains. Students can also use the Outing Club’s equipment and participate in programs ranging from cabin and hiking trips to cycling, paddling, and winter sports; its well-known First-Year Trips help establish that culture early.

Georgetown provides worthwhile outdoor options, but they are more urban and less immediate. The Potomac River, C&O Canal towpath, Rock Creek Park, and the waterfront support running, biking, kayaking, and rowing, and students can join organized excursions through campus outdoor programming. Shenandoah National Park and regional ski areas are reachable for weekend trips, but transportation, planning, and travel time make them less spontaneous than Dartmouth’s options.

Georgetown may be appealing if you want outdoor recreation alongside the energy, internships, museums, and social life of Washington, DC. But for someone whose ideal college routine includes frequent mountain hikes, reliable winter sports, and an outdoor community woven into campus culture, Dartmouth is the clear match.
