Rice is likely to feel marginally more academically difficult overall, especially for students in engineering, computer science, mathematics, and the natural sciences. Its undergraduate population has a particularly strong STEM orientation, and many core sequences move quickly with substantial problem sets, labs, and technical project work. Vanderbilt is also highly rigorous, but the typical experience is more variable across its undergraduate schools and majors.

Rice’s smaller scale and academically intense peer environment can make the workload feel consistently demanding. In technical majors, students often take several quantitatively heavy courses at once, and the collaborative culture means classmates may be working hard together rather than competing openly. That support can make Rice manageable, but it does not necessarily make the classes easier.

Vanderbilt’s academic challenge is especially pronounced in pre-med coursework, engineering, economics, and selective humanities and social-science seminars. Its liberal-arts curriculum also asks students to work outside their primary field, so an engineering or science student will still encounter writing- and discussion-based requirements. However, Vanderbilt offers a wider range of undergraduate schools and academic paths, which creates more room for a student to shape a less uniformly technical schedule.

The difference is not dramatic: a motivated student can build an equally difficult four-year plan at either institution. Rice’s baseline culture and course mix tend to make intensive STEM work a larger part of the average undergraduate experience, while Vanderbilt’s rigor depends somewhat more on the school, major, and pre-professional path a student chooses.
