How should I choose between Columbia and USC for a communications major?

I’m a high school senior deciding between Columbia University and USC, and I’m interested in studying communications. Both schools appeal to me, but I’m having trouble comparing the academic experience and overall fit without relying only on rankings or reputation.

For an undergraduate communications major, USC is the clearer choice because it offers a dedicated Communication B.A. through the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Its curriculum is built around communication theory, media, persuasion, organizations, and digital culture, rather than requiring you to assemble a similar path from several departments. USC’s Los Angeles location also puts students near entertainment, advertising, public relations, digital media, and production opportunities during the academic year.

Columbia does not offer a conventional undergraduate communications major in Columbia College. A student interested in media and communication there would typically create an interdisciplinary route through areas such as sociology, political science, film and media studies, psychology, or writing, while using New York City for internships and cultural access. That can be intellectually rich, but it is less structured and may require more initiative to make your academic focus legible to employers.

USC Annenberg is designed to connect communication scholarship with applied work, and students are surrounded by peers pursuing related media, journalism, public-relations, and communication careers. Columbia’s Core Curriculum would occupy a meaningful part of your first two years and gives you a common foundation in literature, philosophy, history, art, and science; that is valuable if you want communications grounded in a broad liberal-arts education.

USC has especially natural access to entertainment media, brand strategy, creative industries, and West Coast technology-adjacent work. Columbia’s strongest advantage is New York access, particularly for publishing, news, finance-related communications, cultural institutions, and policy-oriented media. Columbia makes most sense if the Core and a self-designed academic path genuinely excite you; USC offers the more direct undergraduate preparation for communications itself.
