Which is better for an undecided major: Columbia or Washington University in St. Louis?

For a student who truly wants room to sample fields before committing, Washington University in St. Louis is likely the more flexible environment.

Columbia can work very well for an undecided student who wants a structured intellectual foundation while exploring. Columbia College’s Core Curriculum exposes students to literature, philosophy, science, art, and major contemporary questions, which can help someone discover interests they did not encounter in high school.

The tradeoff is that Columbia’s Core is substantial and less elective than WashU’s curriculum. That structure is a benefit for students energized by a shared, discussion-heavy liberal-arts experience, but it leaves less scheduling freedom for wide exploration, especially alongside demanding preprofessional or STEM paths.
