Stanford vs. Carnegie Mellon for Undergraduate Research Opportunities

I’m deciding between Stanford and Carnegie Mellon for a computer science undergraduate degree, and research opportunities are one of my biggest priorities. I want to understand which school generally gives undergraduates better access to faculty research, labs, and meaningful research experience.

The practical difference is that Stanford’s most sought-after labs can be highly competitive, and CMU’s demanding technical culture does not make positions automatic either. In both places, students who contact professors early, take relevant courses, build useful skills, and begin with smaller tasks can earn meaningful responsibility over time.
