Should I Choose UVA or Tufts Based on Campus Size?

UVA will feel substantially larger and more spacious day to day. Its Charlottesville Grounds extend across a broad, park-like setting with major academic areas, residence halls, athletic facilities, gardens, and open lawns spread out from one another. Tufts’ Medford/Somerville campus is much more compact and urban-adjacent, with buildings and student activity concentrated along a hillside near Boston.

Choose UVA if you enjoy having room to walk, distinct campus districts, and the feeling that the university is its own environment. The Lawn and Rotunda create a strong central gathering place, but students also move among areas such as Central Grounds, North Grounds, and athletic facilities. That scale can make UVA feel lively without making every part of campus crowded, although getting between classes, housing, and activities may involve longer walks.

Tufts suits students who prefer a close-knit physical campus where most academic buildings, dining, residence halls, and student spaces are readily reachable on foot. Its smaller footprint can make it easier to run into friends and feel connected to daily campus life, but it does not offer the same sense of open space or separation from the surrounding city.
